In this article I’m going to explain how to install a square taper crankset. The installation process is a fairly straightforward one.
In my last blog I gave a detailed description of installing the square taper bottom bracket. Now it’s time for both cranks to get into place.
Let’s get started.

Step 1. Greasing the spindle and bolts

A crankset can definitely seize onto the bottom bracket spindle. You might have noticed yourself when trying to remove it.
So before installing the square taper crankset make sure to apply some grease to both the spindle and bolts.
Step 2. Installing the square taper crankset
With some grease applied to the spindle and bolts it’s time for the crank to be installed.

There are two types of bolts to press the crankset onto the spindle. One for which you’ll need a socket wrench and one for which you can use an 8mm allen key.

I use a special Park Tool Crank Bolt Wrench CCW-5C. It’s a nice tool for the job, because it can be used on both types of bolts.
But the handle width is thin and might hurt your hands when you apply a lot of pressure. I sometimes use a towel wrapped around the handle to prevent this.

I also had the original dust caps. Original dust caps are quite rare and relatively expensive for such a non-essential bicycle part.
While riding this bike for the first time I actually heard one falling out and rolling down the tarmac. So I fixed them into place with a little lock bond.
And that’s how you install a square taper crankset! If you like this article give it a thumbs up. If you have any questions or suggestions for new articles, let me know in the comments below. Cheers.
